Blog Description

“If you are seeking for creative ideas, go out walking. Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk”, an old wise man said. And if it is a walk, better it be a hike, possibly the higher you go, the greater ideas you get, who knows?

None has ever mentioned an activity so adventurous than hiking safaris in Africa, the mountains are always taller than they look, further than they seem and harder than they appear. The experience of hiking in Africa is so thrilling.

Still talking about hiking vacations in Africa, many think of the table mountain in South Africa, or Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Perhaps Mount Kenya or Rwenzori Mountain in Uganda, but nothing beats hiking tours in Rwanda.

A country with mountains covering up the biggest total space area is indeed rightfully called the “land of a thousand hills”. Despite its pocket size, Rwanda is blessed with more than five huge mountain ranges within her boundaries. And not just mountains, but ranges that are sweet to the sights, leaving most travelers on Rwanda safaris wondering how hiking to their top would be. And indeed, all mountains are good to go, the experience is worth the hike.

The famous Karisimbi Mountain is one of the spectacular mountains in Rwanda. It is the highest volcano among the eight ranges of Virunga massif shared between three countries of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Hiking to the top of this mountain takes about two days. Trekkers are rewarded with sights and views of different bird species. Hiking Karisimbi Mountain also furnishes great opportunities for close encounters with the endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park where the mountain is located. This makes Karisimbi an appropriate destination for bird watching expeditions and gorilla trekking in Rwanda.

Mountain Bisoke. Hiking this volcano has undoubtedly been ranked the best, more than any other hiking safari in Rwanda. In any case you find your way into Rwanda, don’t miss it out. Bisoke is an extinct volcano, part of the Virunga Mountains of the Albertine Rift in the western branch of the East African Rift.

It is located on the border of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo though its summit is in Rwanda standing at 3,711 meters. The adventure on mountain Bisoke is one of the most memorable activities you can ever do during your safari in Rwanda. At the top of this mountain is the largest and most spectacular Crater Lake in the nation.

Hiking to the peak of Mount Bisoke is a wonderful adventure that even the non-experienced hikers can do in just a day

Mountain Muhabura. This is the second highest peak in Volcanoes national park and marks the border between Rwanda and Uganda. Hiking to the top of Muhabura can be physically challenging since the slopes are very steep and hikes to the top typically takes a full day starting from the park headquarters at Kinigi.

On the top of the volcano, trekkers enjoy fantastic views of the other five volcanoes and the twin lakes of Rwanda – Burera and Ruhondo.

Mountain Huye. This is another little hill that Rwanda keeps. It is located close to Butare town in southern Rwanda, Huye district within the southern province.

It is bordered by Nyungwe forest in the west and is famously known for its mineral waters that supply both the nearby Maraba fair trade coffee plant and the Huye bottled water. A hike to the top of Huye Mountain gives hikers stunning views of the coffee plantation.

Gahinga Mountain. Climbing Mount Gahinga is the best experience any traveler on a safari trip in Rwanda would ever have. This is the smallest of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga massif. Unlike other mountain hikes, Gahinga furnishes her visitors with pleasant opportunities to view numerous interesting features like its volcano caves.

The hike to the top will typically take half to a full day depending on the strength and fitness of the hikers. On reaching the top, trekkers have beautiful sights of the shallow crater carpeted with swamps and moors. The ambience is totally different from other mountains and national parks.

Indeed, the person who named Rwanda the land of a thousand hills was right. And if any traveler desires to see how glorious a greeting the sun gives to mountains, he should plan a hiking adventure tour in Rwanda.
